Ancestral Healing & Mental Health: The Water Has Called Us Home

Explore African diasporic healing traditions and their connections to contemporary mental health at this gathering hosted by the AAHGS South Carolina Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee Chapter. Scholars, mental health professionals, genealogists, community members, and traditional practitioners will examine ancestral healing, Gullah Geechee traditions, and culturally grounded approaches to wellness.

State Board of Review

The State Board of Review for the National Register of Historic Places will meet Friday, November 20, 2026 at 10:30 AM at the SC Archives & History Center in Columbia. Nominations under consideration for associations with Black history are: Cherry Hill School (Move), Hilton Head Island, Beaufort Co.; McLeod Plantation (Additional Documentation, Boundary Increase, and Boundary Decrease), Charleston, Charleston Co.; Liberty Hill Historic District, North Charleston, Charleston Co.; City of Camden Historic District (Additional Documentation), Camden, Kershaw Co.; and St. Simon’s Episcopal Church and Missionary House, Peak. Newberry Co. The full agenda and draft nominations will be posted online on November 6.
