Acclaimed Topiary Artist Pearl Fryar Passes
Born in North Carolina to a family of sharecroppers and moving to Bishopville, SC in the late 1970s, Pearl Fryar’s journey into topiary art began with a desire to win Yard of the month from his local garden club. With only a short tutorial from the owner of a local plant nuersery, Fryar began to sculpt elaborate topiaries that earned him attention from not only the garden club, who awarded him Yard of the Month in 1986, but across the United States. His home, the site of most of his art, has become an attraction, drawing close to 10,000 visitors a year and is now managed by Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden.
