African American Sites Listed to National Register of Historic Places
The Historical Mosquito Beach Foundation, with Historic Charleston Foundation as the Fiscal Sponsor, has received a $1.25 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to rehabilitate the Pine Tree Hotel and adjacent Skeeta Beach Lounge.
The plan is to take both buildings, built in the 1960s as recreational places for African Americans, and rehabilitate them into an operating hotel, Gullah Geechee market, and restaurant that will draw tourists and locals to the historic area.
