Ceramics Made by Enslaved Potter David Drake Returned to Family
Boston Museum of Fine Arts, who had two of David Drake’s, an enslaved man from Edgefield, SC, ceramic pots has returned them to descendants. Drake’s work stands out because of the inscriptions he placed on the jars; showing Drake was educated during a time where teaching enslaved people to read and write was illegal. The actions of the museum have opened up broader discussions about the inclusion of art work by enslaved artist and restitution of that work to known descendants.
