Historic Black-owned jazz club in Charleston Temporarily Saved from Demolition
On May 28, Charleston’s City Council deferred action on a proposed demolition of the last remnant of Dash Hall–a historic Black-owned jazz and dance hall at 148 Smith Street. Built in the 1890s, this was a rare space where Black Charlestonians gathered freely for music, culture, and community, all while shaping American jazz. More discussions will be had on what to do to save the building and history.
